When To Be Your Own Home Repair Handyman

If you are a homeowner then you are also probably a home repair handyman. Everyone knows that a home in good repair is more comfortable to live in than a home that needs maintenance and holds its market value better than a home in disrepair. Not only that but it becomes cost prohibitive to pay a service or an individual every time a small home maintenance project pops up. But some home maintenance projects are harder than others, so when do you decide whether to try a job yourself or when to pay someone else to do the job for you?

A good rule of thumb for the beginner home repair handyman is don’t touch anything that involves water or electricity! If you need to complete a project that involves wiring or plumbing, and you are not sure of yourself, you can get yourself into a whole lot of hot water! Some electrical projects, like installing a new light fixture, are not very hard and easily mastered but make sure you invest in a good book that will step you through the basics such as turning off the electricity in your house and understanding the wiring configuration so you don’t connect the wrong wires together. Likewise, if you don’t know where to turn off the water in your home, it’s best not to attempt installing a new faucet in the kitchen sink!

A good way to become your own home repair handyman is by finding and hiring a good handyman to help you. When you pay for a service, most of what you pay for is in the cost of labor.  If you want to do a repair yourself and you just need a little help to get started, it is sometimes a good idea to pay someone to do the job for you and then you can learn from them how it’s done. Next time around you can try it yourself. Not only does it save you the time and frustration of getting stuck in the middle of a tricky project that you are not quite sure how to complete, but after you pay someone else to do it you will have a good idea of how much money you are saving yourself next time the job comes up and you decide to do it yourself.

For example, if you pay a handyman to come and put in a new faucet in the kitchen for you, you will learn where to turn the water off, how to drain the water from the old faucet and how to dismantle the old one and install the new one. Then when it comes time to replace a leaky faucet in the bathroom you will have a much better idea of how to do the repair yourself.

As you develop a relationship with a good home repair handyman he will be happy to help you complete something you may have started yourself, or start something for you that you know how to complete. This will save you money overall, allow you to learn how to do your own home repairs and give you the security of knowing that the job was taken care of properly. By observing an expert at work in your home you will develop the skills you need to become your own home repair handyman over time.
